Bathers in the steaming geothermal water of the Sky Lagoon outside Reykjavik
Thermal water, hot marble and an hour face down

Somewhere warm to lie down. Every bathhouse worth the flight.

Which Budapest bath still has room on a Saturday. What an Istanbul scrub actually involves. Whether the crater hot springs below Batur are worth the 2am alarm. Reviews of the spa days, baths and treatments you can book, priced and timed.

Where the bathing cultures are

Six countries that built a whole culture around getting wet.

Volcanic islands with springs at the bottom of every hike, a bathing empire that never closed its doors, foothills full of thermal pools, geothermal shorelines, rose-water hammams and a mountain of onsen towns. Start with the one you can reach.

Bali, bottom of the volcano

In Indonesia the hot water is free and the massage costs less than breakfast.

Batur pours warm water into pools on its own doorstep, and every village between Ubud and Seminyak has a room with a table in it. Four kinds of Indonesian day, what each one costs to walk into.

Water that arrives hot

Springs, thermal baths and onsen: bathing where the heat is geological.

Somewhere under the floor a fault line is doing the work. These are the soaks where the water comes out of the ground already at temperature, from Icelandic shorelines to Japanese mountain towns and the Hungarian aquifer that fills half of Budapest.

The hammam

Steam, a hot marble slab, and somebody scrubbing three days off you.

The ritual barely changes from Istanbul to Marrakesh to Granada: sweat on the heated stone until the skin gives, a coarse kese mitt, a mountain of olive-oil foam, then cold water over your head. Ninety minutes, and you walk out lighter.

Every hammam
The unhurried version

When an hour is not enough: half-day rituals and rooms built for two.

Petals on the water in Ubud, a private hammam suite with mint tea afterwards, a hop-filled wooden tub in Prague with the beer tap beside it. The bookings people make when the trip has a reason behind it.

What an hour in the water costs

What an hour on the table actually costs, country by country.

Every treatment on the site, grouped by price. The gap between a Hue massage and a Reykjavik ritual is the single biggest variable in planning a bathing trip.

Under $50

Municipal thermal pools, Vietnamese and Thai massage rooms, a straight entry ticket to a city bathhouse.

$50-150

The full ritual: hammam with scrub and oil, a day pass with treatments, the volcano-and-spring day trip.

$150 and up

Private suites, half-day rituals, geothermal lagoons with the transfer built in, and rooms booked for two.

Only there

Three bathing traditions that did not travel.

Warm water is everywhere. A mountain town where the rule is nothing on but a small towel, a smoke sauna followed by a hole in the ice, and a wooden tub of hops with a tap beside your elbow are not.

Japan

The onsen rules

You wash sitting down at a low tap before you go anywhere near the water, and you get in with nothing on but a folded towel that never touches the surface. Baths are separated by sex, the water can sit near 42C, and a lot of houses still turn away visible tattoos, though the mountain towns around Arima and Hakone are softening on that. Nobody swims. Nobody talks much either.

Finland

Loyly, then the ice

Loyly is the burst of steam when water hits the stones, and the whole ritual is built around chasing it with cold. In Lapland that means walking out of a 90C wooden room and lowering yourself through a sawn hole in a frozen lake for twenty seconds. A smoke sauna takes most of a day to heat and has no chimney; the soot on the walls is the point.

Czechia

The beer bath

A cedar tub filled with warm water, brewer yeast, hops and dark malt, and a tap of unfiltered lager at arm’s length that you are expected to use. Prague and Karlovy Vary run them by the hour, usually for two, and you finish on a bed of warm straw. The claim is that the B vitamins are good for your skin. The beer is genuinely unlimited.

Book ahead

Four soaks that will not wait until you land.

Most massage rooms take you off the street the same afternoon. These four run on timed entry, one departure a day, or a tub that only exists once an hour.

  1. 01Széchenyi Spa Day Ticket with Optional UpgradesEntry is by dated ticket and the weekend evenings go first. The bath itself never runs out of water; the ticket desk runs out of slots.
  2. 02Sky Lagoon Entrance Pass With 7-Step Spa RitualAdmission is a timed slot, not a day pass. Sunset arrivals in summer are booked out weeks ahead.
  3. 03Mount Batur Sunrise Guided Hike and Natural Hot SpringOne departure, around 2am, and the minibus is full by the evening before. Missing it means missing the springs as well as the sunrise.
  4. 04Bernard Beer Spa with Beer and Massage OptionThere are only so many tubs and each one is booked by the hour for two people. Weekend evenings in Prague go earliest.
Before you undress

The rules nobody tells you until you are already naked.

Bathing culture is full of local law. Swimwear is compulsory in Budapest and forbidden in a Japanese onsen. Hammams run single-sex sessions by the clock, and turning up at the wrong hour means being turned away. Plenty of spas will not take under-16s, tattoos still close doors in Japan, and a heavy lunch before a 90C room is a bad idea everywhere.
